What's so bad about wearing black with brown or navy blue?

Everywhere I turn, these fashion-minded women are always saying that it's bad to to have a black skirt with a brown or navy blue top. Doesn't black go with anything? Plus, I think shirts with black and navy stripes are really pretty.

Is this because brown and navy blue aren't very bold, and thus, make the whole outfit look boring?

black and navy, is actually nice. black and brown, well it's not the best. black and brown just reminds me of this licorice that i hated. i don't know why but it makes me hate the color combination!
